Spiritual WMD

A 40 in 60 Blog

Earlier this century after 9/11 and during the 2003 War in Iraq the term WMD’s or Weapons of Mass Destruction became a phrase familiar and of prominent use. This term was used to describe military weapons that have the ability to bring significant harm to large numbers of humans and/or cause great damage to man-made structures (buildings), natural structures (mountains), or the biosphere.

Just as there are physical WMD’s that can cause tremendous harm and destruction in the natural, there are Spiritual WMD’s that the enemy of our soul uses to destroy and make us ineffective spiritually. However he not only uses Weapons of Mass Destruction, he also uses what would be better termed Weapons of Mass Distractions. The things that are sent to destroy us are usually relatively easy to detect. The things which are sent to distract us often go unnoticed, until it is too late, and are consequently more deadly.

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” Nehemiah 6:3 (NKJV)

What I have learned over the past 40 years is that Satan uses several WMD’s against us but his most powerful one is causing us to be distracted by what is a "good thing" for us to do in order to keep us from what is a "God thing" we have been called to do. He gets us to focus on what is a good thing that usually almost anyone can do so that we are kept from the God thing that we have been assigned and designed to do! A good thing is something that needs to be done and should be done, but it doesn’t have to be done by us . . . as a matter of fact, it probably shouldn’t be done by us, particularly if it is keeping us from a God thing.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be

added to you. Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)

A classic example of this principal is in Acts 6 where the leaders of the early church would not allow a good thing (serving needy widows) keep them from what was a God thing (teaching, discipling, and shepherding the flock). A God thing is something that has been assigned to us by design, gift, burden, skill, need, call, and timing. I am convinced that if Satan has a choice between you doing a good thing that keeps you from your God thing, he will let you do that good thing all day. Because he realizes something we often don’t, that the good is often the enemy of the best.

Here is what I would like to share in 60 seconds that has taken me 40 years to learn . . .

If I truly make seeking God, His Kingdom and His righteousness (not my needs, wants, and passions) my number one priority, I will always be focused on the God thing over the good thing.

  • What has God called and wired you to do?

  • What areas has He called you to excel in that you are uniquely designed to do to make a difference and push forward His Kingdom?

We need to constantly be aware of the enemy’s Weapons of Mass Distraction:

The good thing . . . never let it keep you from the God thing.
